Camilo Pessanha is one of the most important and original Portuguese poets. His best-known admirers include Eugénio de Andrade, Mário de Sá-Carneiro and Fernando Pessoa, who went so far as to celebrate him effusively as one of his masters. Born in Coimbra in 1867, he emigrated at the age of 27 to Macau, in China, where he lived cut off from Portuguese literary circles until his death in 1926. On his last visit to his homeland, he left with Ana de Castro Osório, a notable writer and campaigner for women's rights, the collection of poems that formed the basis for the first edition of his only book of poetry, Clepsydra, which she published in 1920. Over the years, this first collection grew with many other poems, gathered from newspapers and from autograph manuscripts that the poet gave to his friends.
